Below is the belt system for White Tiger Tae Kwon Do. It requires a minimum of three years to attain the rank of Black Belt with a range of four years to six years being an approximate average.

10th gup White - Signifies innocence, as that of the beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Tae Kwon Do.
9th gup Yellow - Signifies the earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the foundation of Tae Kwon Do is being laid.
8th gup Orange - The color orange signifies the changes of Autumn, as the student's mind and body begin to develop and grow as a result of the new Tae Kwon Do experience.
7th gup Green - Signifies the plant's growth as Tae Kwon Do skills begin to develop.
6th gup Blue - Signifies the Heaven towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Tae Kwon Do progresses.
1/2 step Blue/white
5th gup Purple - The color purple represents the changing sky of dawn, as once again the student undergoes a new change and prepares for the transition to advanced student.
1/2 step Purple/white
4th gup Brown - The color brown represents the ripening or maturing process as that of the advanced Tae Kwon Do student whose techniques are beginning to mature.
1/2 step Brown/white
3rd gup Red - Signifies Danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away.
2nd gup Red with white stripe.
1st gup Red with black stripe
1st dan Black - Opposite of white, therefore signifying maturity and proficiency in Tae Kwon Do - also indicates the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.
2nd dan Assistant Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 2 years)
3rd dan Assistant Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 3 years)
4th dan Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 4 years)
5th dan Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 5 years)
6th dan Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 6 years)
7th dan Master Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 7 years) At this rank a person receives the title of "Kwan Jang Nim"
8th dan Master Instructor (must remain at this rank at least 8 years)
9th dan Grand Master

** Half steps/white stripe ranks are belt levels where the material presented is significantly difficult to accomplish as a single step. In some circumstances students (mainly adults) may qualify to consolidate and skip white stripe levels and test for full rank.
